A damped spring: displacement in millimetres and potential energy in millijoules against time, sharing the time axisMarey · A damped spring A dropped ball: fall distance against time, the model curve through six measured points with error bars1. Start · A first figure Black-body radiance against wavelength in µm at 3000 K, 4500 K and 5772 K, with photon energy in eV along the top2. Units are the labels · A spectrum in two units Amplitude against drive frequency near 1 kHz: measured points with error bars, the model curve, its band for Q from 22 to 28, the half-power width shaded, the peak annotated3. Marks and layers · A resonance A Bode plot: gain on a log axis falling past a resonant peak at 1 kHz, phase on the right falling from 0 to −π, frequency in powers of ten4. Axes and scales · A Bode plot Global temperature anomaly in kelvin against CO₂ mole fraction in ppm, one point per year coloured by year, with a least-squares line5. Data in a table · Warming against CO₂ Four lettered panels in the publication theme: amplitude against frequency with an inset on the peak, the residuals below it, and the gain and phase of the transfer function on a log frequency axis6. A figure for a paper · One oscillator, four panels The potential of two opposite line charges on a diverging colour ramp in volts, with equipotentials and field lines running from the positive charge to the negative7. Fields · A dipole The phase portrait of a pendulum: streamlines over angle and angular velocity, the nullclines, centres at 0 and ±2π and saddles at ±π7. Fields · A phase space Three panels: the second bob's tangled path over 20 s, the relative energy drift staying below one part in a million over 300 s, and a scattered Poincaré section8. Simulation · A double pendulum The vorticity behind a cylinder in a channel, alternating vortices of opposite sign shed downstream, with streamlines8. Simulation · Grids and fluids An animation of the Bode plot as the damping ratio rises from 0.05 to 1: the resonant peak falls and the phase step softens9. Animation · The Bode plot, sweeping its damping A storyboard: the resonance measurements appear, morph onto the model while the axis zooms on the peak, and the peak point is ringed10. The storyboard · Filmed The double pendulum swinging for four seconds from its release10. The storyboard · Filmed A recorded session replayed: the driven pendulum's Poincaré section as the drive amplitude rises from 0.9 to 1.5 rad/s², from a single point to a strange attractor, with a periodic window near 1.4512. Interaction · Recorded The driven pendulum's Poincaré section at a drive of 0.9 rad/s², a single point: a periodic orbit. On the site, the slider above it walks the drive to 1.5 rad/s²12. Interaction · A driven pendulum on the way to chaos
